Looking back on the photography elective I really didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It was so enjoyable and I found myself getting really excited and passionate about the work involved. It's a lovely discipline and such an interesting artistic process. In fact photography was possibly the most enjoyable 2 weeks in relation to the other 2 elective choices. I found the most interesting elements to be the research and discovering the different photographers & their beautiful work. I feel like I'm just scratching the surface with this elective as well and if I were to take it all the way to degree level it would really be a diverse and broad course.
Below are some photographers I discovered while doing my contextual research:
Currently in first year studying art & design at Limerick School of Art & Design (LSAD). This is a blog documenting my research and development of our first year brief "To Sense My Space".

Photography Stills
My photography short piece is titled: The Games We Used to Play.
Based on the toys I used to play with as a child. I wanted to photograph these toys as they appear now in their forgotten, dishevelled state hidden among other unused objects in a dark, lifeless space. The idea is that these toys have been abandoned so long they somehow have begun to inhabit a life of their own. The lighting was a key element in the translation of my piece to the audience. I wanted to use the lighting to create an eery atmosphere. I used a torch to illuminate the toys in their crumbling surroundings. I think the torchlight is very effective in emphasising the mysterious atmosphere. The transition from darkness to bright within the piece is also important as it symbolises a journey back to youth/daytime.
This short photographic piece opens with a shot of the moon and taked the viewer on a journey from into an abandoned shed where old toys lie forgotten, gathering dust. I chose to include the blurry out of focus shots because they add to the haunting quality of the work. These were taken intentionally by shaking the camera. I also chose to use a distinctly creepy background audio in order to enhance the eerie atmosphere of my piece. It's a lullaby called "Hush and Rest".

WHEN YOU LOVE SOMEONE - Short Film
"When you Love Someone" tells the story of a boy who tries to run away from his love, after realising that his memories are the only thing he still keeps from his past.
The idea for this project was to create a simple, yet inspiring video, something that could actually make people feel better, awakening deep feelings and emotions. While the original story doens't search for great attention, its potencial remains on the beauty of the images and landscapes, combined with the musical experience.

Photography [Elective 3]
Began my third and final elective today: photography. I'm finding it very interesting so far and really enjoying it. We were giving our brief this morning and our objective is to create a 3 minute short film piece using photographs. We were shown Chris Marker's film "La Jetee" made in the 60's. I found it hard to follow in parts but got the overall idea of the type of work the tutors are expecting from us in our final photography submissions after these two weeks. We were also shown previous student work and after lunch we were given a tour of the photography studio. Tomorrow we will be shown an introduction to Adobe Premier Pro and how to us it.

Building the set
The start of the set. . . .
I wanted to contruct a retro gas station type structure based on filling stations built along Route 66 in the USA. I gathered cardboard boxes, cling film containers, bottle caps, coloured paper and bamboo sticks and began by glueing together an exterior frame. I then painted it with white poster paint and stuck coloured card to various sides to create a colourful & bright look.

Milk Carton Truck
As part of the idea I'm planning to make a pick up truck from a milk carton. In conversation with Tom the previous week he suggested I not paint the truck with red poster paint but leave the milk carton packaging showing through for a quaint and charming appearance. I'm happy with the resulting vehicle. In making it I used lots of double sided sticky tape, bottle caps for the wheels and plastic from a ketchup bottle for the main window and side windows.
